Apple Grove Beekeepers Association
Meeting Minutes
7-21-2020
Opening
Slade called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. and welcomed everyone back again.
There were 14 members and 2 guests present. Our guests, Jack Mathews and Roy Strong, became members at the end of the meeting. Welcome!
New Businesss
John Beers announced that in order for the club to meet at the church, the church is requiring us, or anyone who meets at the church, to have General Liability Insurance. Therefore, we obtained a policy through Farm Bureau which is now in effect. We obtained several quotes and Farm Bureau was the most reasonable.
Due to the fact that our club year-end was June 30th and we typically would have elected new officers, John Beers made several suggestions.
The current officers have agreed to continue serving in their positions until the new elections can be held.
Currently there are no members since our year ended June 30th. **Reminder - - it is time to pay dues to renew your membership!
John proposed changing the Constitution & By-Laws by changing:
Club Year
When we elect officers
John recommended:
Holding elections for new officers in December
Adding positions: Webmaster and Social Media Specialist
John stressed that we need members to step up. Also, any changes and/or revisions to the Constitution & By-Laws needs to be presented 30 days prior to voting, giving all members an opportunity to review.
Treasurer's Report
John Beers presented the Treasurer reports for February, March, April, May, June and July. The February treasurer report is the same as reported in our February meeting, which is as follows:
Bank Statement balance 1/26/2020: $2,281.84
Checkbook balance: $2,281.84
Cash: $212.01
Paypal Balance: $0.00
There are 14 copies of the Beekeeping Basics and 13 copies of the Field Guide to Honey Bees.
The Treasurer reports for March through July are as follows showing little activity other than the sale of several copies of the Beekeeping Basics and Field Guide to Honey Bees.
John Beers requested a vote to approve changing the required audit for the period July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 to July 1, 2019 to December 30, 2020. Jill Kelly motioned to move the audit to December 30, 2020 and Slade Hart seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous in favor.
John went to Ohio to pick up the queens that were ordered. Out of the purchase of $420 for queens, two died.
Old Business
Storage - Slade said he sent an email to the Pastor to ask permission to put a shed on the church property, but he has not received a response yet. Slade said he would follow up with him. Slade also said he needs to get an estimate on what it will cost to build a shed. Both of these items were discussed in our February meeting.
Program Topic
John Beers presented “Summer Hive Management”. John recommended going to the Honey Bee Health Coalition website and downloading the presentation on Varroa Mites to have on hand. John talked about Varroa mites and the various treatments for this time of year (Apivar & Oxilic Acid). Also the benefits of re-queening and screened bottom boards. We watched various videos on sampling for mites (powdered sugar method and the alcohol wash method). John recommended reading the FAQ’s (frequently asked questions) when researching each treatment you are considering. Sometimes the instructions/directions for each type of treatment is not as thorough on the labels/packaging as to what you might learn by reading the “FAQS”. We also talked about small hive beetles and various feeding methods and ratios.
Another very helpful and informative meeting! Thank you John!
The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
