Meeting Minutes

Opening
Slade called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m.
There were approximately 18 members present. We had 2 new members present.
Treasurer’s report was presented by John Beers:
Bank Statement balance 1/26/2020: $2,281.84
Checkbook balance: $2,281.84
Cash: $212.01
Paypal Balance: $0.00
There are 14 copies of the Beekeeping Basics and 13 copies of the Field Guide to Honey Bees.
John said that our bank, Community Bank is now called Blue Ridge Bank. Due to this change, the bank statement ended on the 26th instead of the end of the month. We still have a non-interest bearing account.
New Business
John mentioned that we need storage space of some kind to store our supplies. Currently everything is scattered all around. We need one central location for everything. He anticipated the need for approximately a 5x8 up to 10x10 storage space. Once we have everything in one central location, we can do an inventory sheet and then have a checkout system set up. Dennis Conrad suggested a 5x8 would make moving it easier on a trailer if it ever had to be moved.
This topic was put on hold until our meeting in March. In the meantime there were several members who will be talking with the Pastor to find out if we could put a shed on the Church property, Slade will look into the costs of materials to build one, and we all are to think about this situation and be ready to talk about it again in March in hopes to put a plan in place.
John had copies of American Bee Journals a previous member offered to our club members. John welcomed everyone to take what they wanted. Slade said that whatever is left over he would take to Jouett Elementary School for the students to use and reference.
Slade said that he got an email from a teacher from Trevillians regarding Career Day on April 3, 2020. The teacher would like for a beekeeper to come. There are children, teachers and parents at this event and it would be a great way to reach out to the community. If anyone is interested please see Slade or call him.
Doug Anderson said there is a FREE public event being held on March 21, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Goochland High School where there will be help to assemble bee equipment, boxes, frames, etc. Come on out to this event and bring the equipment you need help with.
Dewey Caron will be presenting March 9th and 12th on “What is your plan” and “To Cull or Not to Cull”. On March 12th he will be at the Montpelier Center from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The location for March 9th is to be determined. Doug Anderson said that Dewey Caron is a very entertaining speaker and he recommends attending this presentation. Mr. Caron is the #1 authority of Bees in Brazil and New Zealand.
Heritage Day in Louisa is April 25, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. There are about 1000 people in attendance. Another great opportunity for the club if there is anyone interested in a booth.
John Beers gave an update on the Queen purchase. He said only 8 queens were ordered by members. John ordered 5 additional ones to push the order over the amount needed to eliminate charges for “supply costs”. He will not be driving to pick up the queens due to the lack of interest. The queens are expected here anywhere from June 1 to July 1.

TOPIC: “Swarms & Splits” - Dennis Conrad presented on swarms and splits and gave us helpful information and tips! Heads up everyone…..Dennis said to start looking for Queen Cells and for Swarms around March 18th!
